souper salad
Growing up with Fresh Choice, my family never went to Souper Salad, except once, long ago, and my blurry memory tells me that the buffet was pretty skimpy. Last night, I went there for the first time in over a decade, and my impression remains the same (although Patrick begs to differ). The cost is cheaper than Fresh Choice by a few (3) dollars, but I think those 3 dollars are well worth it.
Although Souper Salad technically has all the same categories of foods (salad, breads, soups, desserts, pizza, pasta) as Fresh Choice, there is just something about it that makes it feel really barren and inadequate for a buffet. Starting off, the trays holding the lettuce were really shallow so it felt like there just wasn’t a lot there. The other salad toppings were all there, but I think the presentation was just lacking. There were 4 soup choices, 3 breads, and 2 kinds of pizza. At Fresh Choice, theres 5 soups, but many more bread options, along with at least 4 kinds of butters. The desserts and soups are on different sections, whereas at Souper Salad, all the items are one 2 long tables jumbled together. The toppings for the frozen yogurt were in clear plastic tubs on a normal seating table which was quite odd.
As for taste, I have no complaints (mainly because you make your own salad), but the bread was a little dry, maybe because its supposed to be healthy. Overall, if given the choice, I would definitely pick Fresh Choice.
