A trip to Costco landed me a box of Gardenburgers. I started eating veggie patties because I never really liked hamburgers. I started ordering turkey burgers at restaurants but couldn’t find them in any frozen form at HEB, so I settled for veggie ones instead. I started with Boca burgers but after a while I switched to Gardenburgers because thats the kind restaurants usually serve and I really liked the texture. Also, I don’t like meatless products pretending to be meat.

My HEB only stocks the Original Gardenburger, so when I got to Costco, it didn’t occur to me that the box I got would be any different. But alas, I was wrong. The Costco box of 12 patties was the California version, consisting of “broccoli, corn, carrots, bell peppers, onions, and whole grains.” The Original version has “mushrooms, onions, brown rice, rolled oats, a blend of mozzarella and cheddar cheese, parsley and a hint of garlic.”

My opinion? I was initially pretty displeased with the California patty because it was 20 calories more (ok its pretty insignificant but if you ate 1 everyday for a year it would add up). My main beef (haha get it) is that the patty is rather greasy. The Original patty is fairly dry, but this patty left significant yellow grease on the napkin I microwaved it on. The taste is also a little bland, so I tried eating it with mustard. Today I nuked one up, patted it as well as I could with napkins, and squirted some ketchup on it. As I ate it, I realized it seemed very similar to a tater tot! This is really exciting because tater tots are on my pretty much never allowed to eat this list.

So the final verdict- I can deal with the remaining… 9 patties, but I’ll probably go back to buying the small boxes of the Original kind.
