A trip to Costco landed me a box of Gardenburgers. I started eating veggie patties because I never really liked hamburgers. I started ordering turkey burgers at restaurants but couldn’t find them in any frozen form at HEB, so I settled for veggie ones instead. I started with Boca burgers but after a while I switched to Gardenburgers because thats the kind restaurants usually serve and I really liked the texture. Also, I don’t like meatless products pretending to be meat.

Alright, out of the entire city of Dallas, this is what I’ve decided to write about. I’ve been to Dallas a few times to visit my friend at SMU, but this was the first time I’ve seen the city for what it was, rather than being protected and under the guidance of Laura. And I don’t really like it. But I don’t blog about traveling.  Onto food…

I’ve had to take a hiatus on blogging, due to school owning my life for a while, and then came spring break, which meant going home and grazing all day long, on nothing in particular, and yet managing to go straight to my gut.

In the last few weeks, I’ve been making cookies, each slightly different but stemming from the same basic recipe that a friend and I found online last year. I tweaked the recipe to suite my needs over the course of many months. First, I changed the amount of sugar and the type of sugars (1/2 c brown, 1/4 c white). Then I decided to incorporate whole wheat flour, especially if I were making these for myself or my family (3/4 c wheat, 1/2 c white). The rest of the recipe calls for 1 stick of butter, which I substitute with apple sauce to varying degrees, depending, a splash of vanilla, salt, and 1 egg.

carb binge

I made the mistake today of eating no substantial carbs at lunch or dinner. I had cereal in the morning but then only had a Kashi granola bar and half of a Pumpkin Spice Clif bar all day. I had plenty of fruits, but I don’t count them as real carbs. So inevitably after work at 10:30 pm, I starting wandering the little convenience store at school for something to satisfy my craving for… something.

I’m usually pretty skeptical about protein bars, due to a bad experience with a Clif Body Builder’s bar. But I couldn’t resist the idea of 25 grams of protein in single bar! Note: This may not be impressive for those of you who regularly pump iron, but for my 5′2 frame, 25 grams is a lot. They also had bars with 30 grams but I thought that would be overkill.

Taste? Dangerously good. Dangerous meaning that the Chocolate Chip Brownie flavor I bought tasted good enough to be similar to a store bought prepackaged brownie. This means I could eat an entire bar in one sitting, which is bad. Half a bar at a time should be plenty for someone my size. But this could be a good option if you had an early dinner and needed something sweet and filling to hold you over until the next morning. Just be careful- the saturated fat is a little high.

the elvis

Amy’s has never failed me, but tonight I discovered something exceptional.  Last night Patrick and I were at Amy’s as well, and I just got a tiny scoop of Mexican Vanilla. Dark chocolate with strawberries is another one of my favorites, but I have a new top pick now. Tonight we went back because Patrick didn’t get ice cream last night, and he asked the employee what her favorite was. The Elvis, she said. Bananas, a Reese’s peanut butter cup, and Mexican Vanilla. Absolutely divine.

Half of a ripe banana squashed, a semi frozen Reese’s cup chopped into pieces, and a generous scoop (as always) of Mexican Vanilla. The bananas added such a  wonderful textural  experience to it, and I love my chocolate cold. And you can’t go wrong with Mexican Vanilla. We polished the cup off in less than 3 minutes flat. =)

donuts?!

Aside from the VERY occasional donut hole I steal from Patrick’s apartment, I haven’t had a donut in years. However, on Tuesday I had such a strong craving for a dense, chocolate, donut that I just had to give in. Life is about giving in and enjoying these things, right? Right.

So Weds at around noon (bad idea, eating donuts instead of a proper lunch), Patrick and I took a trip to Ken’s Donuts. Why Ken’s? Because its really close and supposedly really cheap. I don’t know much about donuts except that Krispy Kreme is too sweet and I’m not driving to Round Rock.

pria 110 plus

I was drawn to the energy bars section at HEB last night for no particular reason when I found these bars. At first I wasn’t too enticed; I was too busy awing over the monstrosity of the body building bars with a bazillion grams of protein. I threw one in my cart and didn’t realize until today that they have 30% of the calcium I need for a day! This is awesome because I don’t like to drink milk and I only eat 1 serving of yogurt a day.

fino

18Feb08

Uh… don’t come here. I almost don’t want to say any more, but I guess I should explain why you shouldn’t eat here. Its just not very good. Ok I’ll be more specific.

First, I will cut them a little slack, as I was there Valentine’s evening, one of the busiest, if not busiest times for the restaurant industry. But the amount of slack they need is not what I am willing to give.

capers!

18Feb08

capers.jpg

I used to think these weird green balls were kind of gross, but I’ve grown to appreciate the salty and sour buds quite a bit now that my palate has matured (or at least I think my palate has matured some).

I only recently learned what capers really are- immature buds from a bush native to the Middle East and Mediterranean regions. They’re picked and then packed in a brine, which is how you can buy them in the store.
